5 Simple Tips To Add More Colour To Your Home

March 01, 2024

Colourful decorative letter signs in a boys bedroom

It goes without saying that at Sketch By Sam we absolutely love a colourful interior. Whether it’s colour drenching, maximalist wallpapers or dopamine décor, we are definitely here for a colour orientated interior design trend because it gives us any excuse to show off our bold and playful pieces of wall art.

As an independent homeware brand, we love nothing more than to see our laser cut creations hanging on the wall in a beautifully decorated home. Not only do they inject fun, energy and colour into a room, but they also go hand in hand with the latest dopamine décor trend so we thought we’d give you the lowdown on what dopamine décor actually is and how you can make your home have a more colourful aesthetic.

What is Dopamine Décor?

So first things first, let’s chat about what ‘dopamine décor’ actually is. You’ve probably heard the phrase being thrown around, especially if you follow any eclectic interior design accounts over on Instagram (more about that later). Well to put it simply, it’s any kind of décor that evokes joy and makes you feel happy. Dopamine is the ‘feel-good’ chemical which our bodies make when we feel happy, it is released into our brain and helps boosts our mood, so it’s a definite win-win!

I've been experimenting in my own home with the idea of dopamine decor and recently redecorated our living room, much to my husband's disapproval! The walls have been painted with warm cosy shades from Lick and I've added a colourful statement wallpaper for that extra wow factor. We've invested in some fun coloured sofas for this room and obviously they're covered in quirky cushions. I'm a sucker for a piece of vintage furniture and I've style that with colourful trinkets that I've collected over the years. I absolutely love this room and look forward to settling down in front of Netflix at any opportunity!

Dopamine décor is the polar opposite of minimal, beige décor. It’s all about having fun with the space, injecting colour, fun and personality into the room and most importantly creating a room which is full of the things that make you happy. We’ve compiled 5 of our top tricks on how you can add more colour to your home and start releasing those feel-good hormones asap!

  1. Get Creative With Paint

Forget about all those muted colour palettes and get a bit daring with your paint choices. Cheaper than wallpapers you spot on Instagram, painting can be a much more budget friendly way to add colour to your home. We’re not saying you need to paint your whole room bright Pink (although that could be fun). Try painting an accent wall, colour block your room and just paint the bottom half of the wall or get really brave and paint your ceiling. Buy some paint samples and add a splash of your favourite colours to the room, frog tape will become your new best friend!

  1. Inject Colour With Textiles

Whether it’s a brightly coloured cushion, fun lampshade or a blanket you just want to get snuggled up into, adding colourful textiles into your room will elevate the space and make your house feel more like a home. These pieces can be expensive so be sure to do your research and only buy pieces that you love. Textiles are always an easy win when added to a room as they make spaces feel warmer, cosy and inviting. If you ask me, you can never have too many cushions and throws.

  1. Hang Mood-Boosting Wall Art

Well, you’re certainly in the right place if you’re looking for some feel-good wall art for your home. Sketch By Sam is home to a whole range of eye-catching wall hangings which will add joy and playful energy into any room whether it’s a kid’s bedroom or a vibrant living room. Adding fun artwork into a room is a great way of adding colour into your home, not only is it super easy, but it also adds personality and detail to the space. The addition of colourful wall art requires minimal effort for maximalist results, the hardest part is picking which artwork you’d like to display! If you don’t know where to get started, you should definitely browse our collection of unique wall art for tonnes of inspiration.

  1. Get Bold And Add Patterns

This one might sound a little terrifying if you’re new to the world of print design but introducing a pattern is a simple way of adding more colour and texture into your house. You don’t need to be an expert in pattern clashing and it doesn’t need to be an eclectic statement wallpaper, instead you could opt for a patterned cushion or rug. Simple patterns such as stripes, spots and chevrons are always easy to slot into a room to boost the colour.

  1. Add fun vinyl and decals

Vinyl and decals are a great way to add more colour into your home without it being too permanent, perfect if you want to spruce up a rented home on a budget. You can use vinyl to upcycle old furniture or revamp a kitchen with colourful vinyl tiles. I’m obsessed with the Jes Rose website currently and have about a million DIY projects on my to do list after scrolling through all of the amazing designs. Decals are also great for adding a burst of colour into a kid’s bedroom, even better because you can remove them and change up the designs as they grow up.

Colourful Instagram Accounts You Need To Follow

Obviously, Instagram is jam packed with colourful home inspiration and I often find myself mindlessly scrolling through Insta drooling over all the gorgeous home interiors that I stumble across. With that being said, I thought I’d share some of my favourite home accounts on Instagram, all bursting with energy and colour!

I hope you enjoyed my round up of colourful home accounts on Instagram. We’re always on the lookout for fun colourful homes, so get in touch with us on Instagram and share your favourite accounts with us. To end on a more humbling note, just a reminder that although Interior design trends are great to follow and be inspired by, always remember that they are just trends, and your home doesn’t need to look like a magazine. We’ve all seen those ‘Insta Vs Reality’ reels, and it’s true, even the gorgeous homes we follow in Instagram have flaws and that’s exactly why we love the dopamine décor trend so much. It takes the pressure off creating a perfect space and instead encourages us to create a happy and joyful spaces that we want to spend time in.
