Nice To Meet You!

Well here it is, my first ever blog post! It’s only right that I kick things off by telling you a bit about me, how the business started and where the idea came from.

My name is Sam and I’m the creator of Sketch By Sam. I've been a little bit obsessed with laser cutters for many years now (weird I know!) I first came across one at high school and then again during my final year of uni before finally taking the plunge to buy one earlier this year.

I studied Fashion Design at Manchester School of Art and used a laser cutter to craft a pair of completely bespoke leather trousers. The machine engraved an intricate pattern into the leather before precisely cutting out the pattern pieces so that they could be sewn together. I even laser cut my own buttons for the collection!

Skip ahead another few years and I took on the challenge of designing and making a light sign for my other business, The Volkswagen Wedding Co. The sign features large acrylic letters which light up with LEDs and is fixed to the top of our Campervan.

It was at this point that I knew I could make a business using one of these machines! When the lockdown hit earlier this year, I finally had the time to get Sketch By Sam up and running and decided to invest in my very own machine.

Outside of work, I love bold patterns, colour and anything that's a bit quirky or unusual! I wanted to channel this into the brand and make products which are truly unique and different. I started with the large alphabet letter signs and this has developed into a small range which includes custom words signs, wooden Christmas decorations and so much more. In the future I hope to add more fonts, colours and expand the options.
